Midway: The Musical (2020) – 2 Act Musical – Creator, Composer, Writer, Lyricist
When a college-bound carnie comes upon a cartoonishly capitalist conspiracy, she gets one last chance to rise above her station, fall in love, and uncover the stupid truth about raccoons.
Midway: The Musical is my capstone Musical project, written from 2019-2020. It was successfully pitched to SUNY Fredonia’s Performing Arts Company (PAC), and it had been approved, staffed, cast, and partially rehearsed by March of 2020. The onset of COVID-19 unfortunately delayed, and ultimately cancelled, its May premiere.
The show was brought to life by director Molly Conklin, Assistant Director Caroline Schettler, Stage Manager Hannah Tyman, and Music Directors Niklas Dahlen and Daniel Barna. It starred Mikaila Mackey, Jong Sang Rheu, Jess Staiano, Alissa Rojas, Emily Minch, Matthew Baum, Brianna Puma, and Nigel Reynolds.
My “unpublished” program notes.
Years ago, when I started imagining the weird implications of the phrase 'corporate carnies', I never would’ve imagined it would lead to me sitting in the audience of my own musical. And even though my name is underneath the title, there are certain people who provided guidance, advice, and support, without whom I would not have been able to do this.
I'd like to thank Professor Jamie Leigh Sampson, who helped me get the project moving at the beginning, and has served as a valuable source of compositional guidance ever since. I'd also like to thank Dr. Andrew Martin Smith, who likewise helped me manage the scope and workflow of the last few drafts, and has been a wonderful teacher throughout my college career. Dr. Rob Deemer and Dr. Paul Coleman have also helped me develop my abilities as a student and an aspiring professional since my earliest ventures, and for that I thank them profusely.
To the cast and crew, thank you so much for dedicating your time and energy to bring my ideas to life. You all display a tireless work ethic that inspired me to bring the best material I could, and for that, I truly thank you.
And to my friends and family, on-campus and off, who have kept me grounded and alive even when the going got nuts; I'm not always the most communicable with my adoration, but I hope you know that I love you all, and I am richer for having known you.
Once again, please enjoy our show, Midway: The Musical!
